Vocabulary is one of the most important aspect for foreign language learners to acquire since it is critical in conveying the meaning of a message. Without a sufficient vocabulary, one cannot communicate effectively or express his or her ideas in both oral and written form. The objective of the study is to investigate whether the use of flashcard is more effective than word list in teaching vocabulary to the eleventh grade students at MAN 1 Kediri. To achieve the purpose of this study, the design used is the quasi experimental research. The subject of this research is the students at the eleventh grade students of MAN 1 Kediri in the second semester in the academic year of 2016/2017 that consists 60 students. The subjects are divided into two classes, A class as experimental group and B class as control group. Class A is taught by using flashcard and class B is taught by using word list. To collect the data, the researcher used pre-test and post-test at experimental and control group. The result of the tests was analyzed by using ANCOVA through SPSS 16. Based on the data analysis, the result of statistical computation of ANCOVA reveals that the significant value was (p) .005 < 0.05 level. Since the significant value was smaller than 0.05 statistically, there was enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis. It means that the students who were taught by using flashcard got significantly better vocabulary mastery than the students who were taught by using word list. Therefore, the hypothesis “the students who are taught by using flashcard get better vocabulary mastery than the students who are taught by using word list” is accepted. It can be concluded that the use of flashcard is more effective than the use of word list in teaching vocabulary mastery.
