The Correlation between Reading Strategies and Reading Skill of the Eleventh Grade Students’ of SMAN 1 Ngadiluwih Kediri

Abstrak

Reading skill is cognitive ability. Every students has a different strategies to understand some texts. In this study, the researcher divided reading strategies into three; there are metacognitive, cognitive, and support. The purpose of this study was to explore the correlation between reading strategies and reading skill of the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Ngadiluwih Kediri. The research design used descriptive survey approach. The subjects of this study are the students of SMAN 1 Ngadiluwih Kediri especially students of the Eleventh Grade. There are 90 students. The Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS) by Mokhtari and Reichard (2002) was used as the instrument to collect data on the participants’ usage of reading strategies, and reading test is used to collect data on students’ reading skill. Data obtained are analyses using the Statistical Program for Social Science (SPSS) using Pearson Product-moment correlation analysis. The results indicated that a high awareness of reading strategy was used by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Ngadiluwih Kediri. Students had a preference for cognitive reading strategies, followed by support strategies and metacognitive strategies. Students’ reading skill at eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Ngadiluwih Kediri is low. Many students got score under the score minimum of English. The result of Pearson Product-moment computation shows that there is significant correlation between students’ reading strategies and their reading skill. Significant value is 0.001 < 0.005. However, the coefficient correlation is 0.357 which is which is categorized in low correlation.
