The Effect of Gender and Types of Personality on EFL Students’ English Speaking Skills

Abstrak

This research is generally attempted to know and describe the effect of gender and types of personality on EFL Students’ English Speaking Skills at English Education Department of State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Kediri. The fourth semester students who programmed Public Speaking Course in academic year 2020 are involved in this research. By utilizing an ex post facto with an application of 2 x 4 factorial design, this research involves questionnaire and oral speaking test to collect the needed data. The questionnaire which is taken from standardized personality test by Florence Littauer is used to get the data of students’ types of personality (sanguine, choleric, melancholic, or phlegmatic). The scoring rubric which is taken from David P. Harris is used to measure students’ speaking skills from oral test. In analyzing the obtained data, the first step is conducting a normality test, the second step a homogeneity test is involved, and the last is answering the hypothesis of the research by utilizing two-way ANOVA. The findings of this research indicate that (1) there are some significant differences in speaking skills between female and male students, (2) there are some significant differences in speaking skills among sanguine, choleric, melancholic, and phlegmatic students, (3) there is no interaction effect between gender and types of personality on students’ speaking skills.
