A Meta-Function Analysis Of Educational Related Quotes On Instagram

Abstrak

This study was conducted to discover the verbal text and visual design utilized in Instagram educational quotes and to explore how each element communicate meanings in text-image to attract the viewer or reader. The data was analyzed descriptively by using Kress and Leeuwen’s (2006) theory for visual design, and Halliday and Mathiesen’s (2004) theory for verbal text. This study used InsTake Downloader to collect the data. There are three stages to analyse the data; (1) organizing and familiarizing, (2) coding and reducing, (3) interpreting and representing. The findings revealed 4 kinds of process from visual design employed in the Instagram educational quotes. The visual design consists of representational, interactional, and compositional meaning. The representational meaning is realized through the narrative process and conceptual process. The narrative process is created by showing 7 actional process and 13 reactional process. however, the conceptual process is employed in an analytical process 6 times and symbolic process 6 times. Besides, the findings show 2 kinds of process by functional grammar. Functional grammar consists of ideational, interpersonal, and textual meaning. The ideational meaning shows by 5 mental process and 12 relational process. Thus, 1 data is mix process and 14 data are absence of process. It is shown that visual design contributes to build the message that is intended by the producer to attract the reader or viewer. Besides interactive meaning in the visual design strengthen the relationship between producer and viewer. As well as interpersonal meaning the attitude of the speaker built the relationship between the speaker and the reader. However, compositional and textual meaning deals with organizing and structuring the elements of each data.
