Keywords: Types of impoliteness strategies, impoliteness functions, Hidden Figures Movie This study examines the types and the functions of impoliteness strategies in the Hidden Figures movie. In this study, the theory used is the impoliteness strategies theory of Culpeper (2005) which divides impoliteness strategies into five types and three functions. The types are bald on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm or mock politeness and withhold politeness. The functions are affective function, coercive function, and entertaining function. This study uses a qualitative content analysis to focus on the characteristics of language as communication to the content or contextual meaning of the text from the characters’ utterances in the Hidden Figures movie. This method is used for classifying the utterances through coding and identifying the impoliteness strategies from Culpeper (2005) theory. In this study, the researcher found all types of impoliteness strategies according to Culpeper’s theory and found all impoliteness functions used by characters in the Hidden Figures movie.
