An Analysis On Grammatical Errors Made By English Language And Education Students In Writing Thesis Abstract (A Case Study At State Islamic Institute Of Kediri)

Abstrak

This research focused on analysis of grammatical errors in the students’ thesis abstract in English Language Education at State Islamic Institute of Kediri. There are two research questions formulated in this study, they are: 1) “What kinds of grammatical errors that made by students in writing thesis abstract at State Islamic Institute of Kediri?” and 2) “What type of grammatical errors that the most frequently occur in writing thesis abstract?” This research is a descriptive-qualitative study. The data of this research were 10 thesis abstracts year 2020-2021 in English Language Educaion at State Islamic Institute of Kediri. The data analysis uses an error analysis technique proposed by Corder. (1981) This study used grammatical error classification proposed by Azar (1989). From the result there were 44 errors found in the students’ thesis abstract. Verb tense is the highest frequency of errors with 9 errors (20,45%), followed by singular-plural errors with 6 errors (13,63%), omit a word with 6 errors (13,63%), capitalization with 6 errors (13,63%), punctuation with 5 errors (11,36%), spelling with 4 errors (9,09%), word form with 3 errors (6,81%), word choice with 2 errors (4,54%), and the last is add a word errors with 2 errors (4,54%). The findings of this research indicate that the students’ abstract still lacked precision and accuracy in terms of language use. It can be inferred that the students need deeper understanding to achieve language convention mastery. It is recommended that the lecturer encourage students to improve their writing skills and proofread their writing
