Psychoanalysis On Kevin’s Anxiety And Self-Defense Mechanism In The Split Movie

Abstrak

Movie is one of literary work which is series of story that combine voice, picture and gesture. A movie is created to express story or passage that happened in human social life. Relating with it, the researcher chooses the split movie which is a psychological thriller by Night Shyamalan to be conducted as an object of study. This study is written to answer two research problem, that are: (1) What are the types of Kevin’s anxiety?, (2) What are the self-defense mechanism to overcome Kevin’s anxiety?. This thesis analyses the psychological condition that be felt by Kevin as the main character in the split movie. The aim of this study is to find out the anxiety that be suffered by Kevin and how to reduce it by conduct his defense mechanism. To support this study, the researcher uses Sigmund Freud’s theory to collect the data about psychology clearly. This study uses qualitative research with descriptive analysis method where the result of research finding be showed using words, phrase, and sentences. The data of the research are pictures and dialogues that be expressed by the main character. The result of the study shows that Kevin has three types of anxiety consists of realistic anxiety, neurotic anxiety and moral anxiety. It is caused by the violence that be done by his mother in his childhood so that it makes him getting traumatic experience. Then he brings it until an adult and creates many personalies or known Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) as his defense mechanism. Therefore he creates the defense mechanism that consists of displacement, repression, regression, reaction formation, and projection.
