Speaking is one among the foremost necessary skills in learning a far off language, particularly English. Speaking is that the ability to express, convey concepts or feigns verbally. Researchers found that a lot of students who learn English still have issues in communication. The aim of this study was to work out the effectiveness of the employ mint of image story book techniques in the learning process of speaking for the eighth-grade students MTsN 5 Nganjuk. This research utilizes a quasi-experimental design with the treatment held in three meetings, 2 x 45 minutes for each class. This plan utilizes a pre-test posttest to decide students speaking capacities. The amount of students is 70 students. The number of inhabitants in this examination is the students of class VIII MTsN 5 Nganjuk. Tests were taken two classes, one class as a test class was VIII-B and the other class as a control class was VIII-C. In collecting data, the researcher utilized instruments of pre-test and post-test. To investigate the data the researcher used SPSS 21.0. The results of this research showed that the data are normally distributed. It was proven by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test that p is (0.196) for pre-test of the experimental group, p (0.123) for pre-test of the control group, p (0.200) for post-test of the experimental group, and p (0.197) for post-test of the control group. Those were higher than α (0.05. It means there is no interaction between covariate variables and independent variables. The result of the normality assumption from both experimental and control group is higher than α (0.05). The distribution of dependent variable from pre-test is normal that p is (0.123) > α (0.05) for the control group and p (0.196) > α (0.05) for the experimental group. Then, the distribution of dependent variable from post-test is normal that p is (0.197) > α (0.05) for the experimental group and p (0.200) > α (0.05) for the control group. The homogeneity variance assumption from both groups is homogeneous. The Levene’s test result shows the significant value that is p (0.977) > α (0.05), and also there is no interaction between covariate and independent variable, as evidence by p is (0.369) > α (0.05). Furthermore, there is a significant relationship between the covariate and the dependent variable, p (0.000) < α (0.05). Then, the result of statistical computation using ANCOVA shows that the result is significant p (0.000) < α (0.05). Since the significant value is lower than 0.05, there is no enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis (H0), then the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is received. It means that Picture Story Book technique is effective to teach students’ speaking skill.
