Improving Students’ Writing Competence By Using Draw Label Caption (DLC) Strategy At Junior High School

Abstrak

Writing is an important skill in English that should be comprehended by students, especially in this century. Although writing is an important skill, many students still have difficulty in writing. Mastery of writing is a challenge for students. The design of this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR). This study was conducted in two cycles with three meetings in each cycle and consisted of four steps, these are the following: plan, action, observation, and reflection. The result showed that used Draw, Label, and Caption (DLC) strategy in the teaching and learning process of writing was believed to be effective to improve the students’ writing competence of seventh grade at MTS Darussalam Bulubrangsi. Then, the students’ writing scores were measured quantitatively by comparing the mean scores of preliminary study, test 1, and test 2. It showed that the average score of the students’ writing increased from 64,775 in the preliminary study to 72,125 in the cycle test 1. Then, in test cycle 2, it increased to 77.275. In addition, the students who got the scores that met the KKM in the preliminary study were 4 students, or 20%, and 9 students, or 45%, in test cycle 1. Then, in test cycle 2, the students whose scores met the KKM were 16 students, or 80%. Based this result, the researcher concludes that the Draw, Label, Caption (DLC) strategy is effectively used in teaching writing competence to 7th grade students of MTS Darussalam Bulubrangsi.
