This study is aimed to investigate the students’ ability in writing descriptive text at tenth grades of SMAN 3 KEDIRI. In writing, students must understand and know about vocabulary, grammar, sentence connection sentence structure, etc. Sometimes the students can speak English fluently but they can not understand in Writing or making article. But the real, most of Indonesian students could not learn English well, especially in Writing. There are many problems in writing especially in writing descriptive text. This research used descriptive qualitative research because to describe the ability of writing descriptive text by rubric from Jacobs Holly L. The aspects are content, organization, vocabulary, language use and mechanic. The subject of the study is the tenth grades of Sman 3 Kediri especially class Mipa 3 which consists 35 students. Guided writing test used as the data collection method. The student is divided into four classifications: excellent, good, fair, and less based on their writing score. The findings revealed It was shown by the test with the mean score 73,9 is fair classification. In the four components, namely content, organization, vocabulary and mechanics, students X Mipa 3 get a good to average score. While for the language component, their ability score is classification fair to poor score with a percentage of 27 Students (77,2% ). According to the results of interviews from both teachers and students, it can be concluded that the students ability to understand the use of language in writing descriptive text is still lacking.
