Writing an essay is an activity that must be done carefully, with full concentration and the discussion must be on topic. In essay writing there is no limit in the number of words written. students experience difficulties in writing because they do not understand vocabulary, sentence structure and others. In this study, the researcher made observations when students were working on writing essays. There are several factors why the researcher made this observation. Observations were made to determine how well students understood how to write an essay correctly. This study aims to find out what are the difficulties of students when writing essays. The research problem in this research is find difficulties in English essay writing in grade X IPA 4 MAN 1 Kediri. This research uses qualitative method to solve the problem. The type of qualitative method the researchers using descriptive to know the difficulties of student’s English essay activities. The researchers find two difficulties in English essay writing activities. The results of the research is that students in grade X IPA 4 MAN 1 Kediri still have problems in writing activities and need guide from the teacher. The problems faced by students like : vocabulary and grammar. This subject of the research was 31 Students. The problem with some grade X IPA 4 students is a lack of interest in English material, especially in essay writing activities. In this activity students find difficulties such as wrong vocabulary and wrong grammar like “cellphone, body, and round.
