Abstrak

ABSTRACT Pertiwi, Piranti Astri. 2022, Students’ Personality and Self-Efficacy Toward Listening Comprehension Ability, Department of English Language Education, Faculty of Graduate Degree, State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Kediri, Advisors: Dr. Ary Setya Budhi Ningrum, M.Pd., and Dr. Toyyibah, SS. M. Pd. Key Words: Personality, Self-Efficacy, Listening Comprehension Skill, Path Analysis. The existence of personality and self-efficacy are believed in influencing the result of student performance in completing listening comprehension. It is the reason of researcher to figure out the direct dan indirect effect on students’ listening comprehension through personality, and self-efficacy as the mediating variable. The researcher implements a quantitative research methodology using a mediating path analysis model to figure out the direct and indirect influence among variables. There are three instruments in this research in the form of questionnaires and test. Questionnaire of personality is adopted from Carter, self-efficacy questionnaire is adopted from Bandura and TOEFL Test is developed by ETS as the instrument of the listening test. There are 143 participants of eleventh grader of SMAN 4 Kota Kediri. For analyzing the direct and indirect contribution, the researcher uses AMOS 25.0 through Sobel test. The result of this research shows personality and self-efficacy have direct contribution toward students’ listening comprehension with P value ***; lower than .05, the Critical Ratio (C.R) 5,543 which was higher than 1.96 at 5% significant level means the contribution was strong, meanwhile students’ self-efficacy has direct contribution on listening comprehension with -value was ***; lower than .05. Besides, the Critical Ratio (C.R) was 3,512 which was higher than 1.96 at 5% significant level means that the contribution was weak. In term of the indirect contribution of personality toward listening comprehension mediated by selfefficacy among the students The Z-Sobel was 2.3208 with p-value .020, meaning there was significant indirect contribution. This research will contribute theoretically that personality and self-efficacy will affect students ability to do listening assignments, as well as help teachers to improve listening scores practically.
