Politeness is an important act to build a connection between human beings. In some social culture, politeness is used as a differentiator between the higher and lower social status. Lower status speakers usually should act more politely towards the higher status and the higher status cannot be too polite. Eckert and McConnell-Ginet (2003) pointed out that, beause of the social factors, men have higher social status, thus leading to their privileges in speech. Earth Dance novel by Oka Rusmini is about a story of a Balinese women from four generation that narrated by the main character, Ida Ayu Telaga. Ida Ayu Telaga was born from a noble family then married a commoner male character and she did a ritual to continued her life as a commoner. The researcher wants to explore the types of politeness strategy of the main character towards the male characters from the higher status to a commoner one and identify the factors that affect the main character’s politeness towards male characters. Research design of this study is a qualitative descriptive research method design. The data of the research was collected by selecting main character’s utterances that consist of the use of politeness strategies. The theory used by the researcher is Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory (1987). The researcher uses the theory to explore the types of politeness of the main character. After the data were collected, the researcher began to identify the main character’s utterances towards the male characters to find the factors that affecting the main character’s politeness. Then, the researcher explained the main character’s politeness and the factors affecting the use of politeness. The result of the study is that the most used politeness strategy by the main character is positive politeness strategy. There are 16 utterances of positive politeness by the main character. The second politeness type most used by the main character is negative strategy, there are 14 utterances in total. The third most used politeness type is bald on record strategy, the total of the utterances are 13 utterances. The least politeness strategy type that the main character used is bald off record strategy, there are only 2 utterances categorized as bald off record strategy.
