Writing is one of the most important skills used in language learning. Writing is one of the skills that must be learned by students, including in learning English. Based on the observations, the researcher found the portfolios of SMAN 6 Kediri students still had difficulties in writing descriptive texts. The objective of the research is to find out what the students problems are in writing descriptive text. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative. This research design is used to find out students’ problems in writing descriptive text. Subjects in this study were students of class X-1 and X-4 of SMAN 6 Kediri. The researchers used two instruments. The first instrument is questionnaire consist 20 questions, the questions taken from 5 aspect organization, vocabulary, grammar, mechanic, and content. 57 students filled out the questionnaire. The second instrument is interviews with 5 questions and a total 6 of 57 students were interviewed by researcher. Based on the average results the majority of each indicator, the students main problem in writing descriptive texts is vocabulary 1.93, content is 2.04, grammar is 2.07, organization 2,13, and mechanics 2,37. It means there is indeed a problem faced by students in writing descriptive texts which especially in the use of vocabulary. From the results of the interviews, it is known that students have many difficulties with vocabulary. Because the lack of vocabulary variants they have, and according to students’ vocabulary is difficult. So, the teacher must be aware in learning to write, especially in writing descriptive text. Teachers should further improve learning methods so that students are more interested in learning to write.
