The Correlation Between Student’s Self-Confidence and Their Performance in Speaking Class

Abstrak

Confidence is the ability to take appropriate and effective action in any situation and speaking is the part of language skills which is focused on practice and performance. The objective of this study is to know whether the higher the student’s self-confidence, the better their performance in speaking class. In order to achieve the objective of the research and the answer of the research question, the researcher using correlational research. The subject of this study is the second semester students of English Department in STAIN Kediri. There are two instruments in this study that are questionnaire and test. Questionnaire is given to the subject of the research to know their confidence. Meanwhile, the test is used to measure the student’s speaking skill. Before doing the real research, the questionnaire and speaking test was tried out first. Then, the result of the test analized using Kendall’s Tau-b of IBM® SPSS® Software ver. 21.00 for Windows as the distribution of the data is not normal. The result showed that there is no significant correlation between student’s self-confidence and their speaking class as evidenced by P (0,096) > α (0.05). It can be interprated that the self-confidence can be used to predict the student’s performance in speaking class. To the further researcher, they need to know the possibility of another result of the study and prepare the research properly.
