This research delves into the translation challenges posed by culture-specific items (CSIs) within Ahmad Toharis anthology "Kind Looking Eyes." CSIs, cultural elements unique to specific languages or cultures, complicate translation due to their nuanced cultural connotations. The study focuses on the intricate semantics of translating CSIs, necessitating a deep comprehension of both source and target cultures. Employing qualitative methodology, the research scrutinizes CSIs, particularly figurative language, in both source and target versions. The researcher directly collects data, aided by supplementary tools like field notes. The data collection process employs library research and the explicatory contrastive method, leading to a semantic categorization of CSIs as lost or gained in translation. The study identifies 24 losses and 1 gain among 25 CSIs, contributing to our grasp of cultural elements in translation through Newmarks theory-based classification.
