Students’ Motivation In English Language Learning Of Eleven Graders At SMAN 1 Ngadiluwih
Abstrak
Motivation is the main point to determine the students desire to learn English. Students’ motivation will be correlated with their performance and achievement during the learning process. The research aimed are (1) To identify the level of motivation, and which motivation is more dominant on students in learning English at SMAN 1 Ngadiluwih, (2) To explore the supporting factors in English learning process at SMAN 1 Ngadiluwih, (3) To reveal the factors affecting students difficulties in English learning at SMAN 1 Ngadiluwih. This study attempts to investigate the types of students motivation, based on Ryan and Decis self-determination theory—intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach. Data collection was carried out by questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The questionnaire was used to measure student learning motivation to find out what motivation was more dominant among eleventh grade students. Meanwhile, interview and documentation methods are being utilized to reinforce the results of the motivation questionnaire given to students, as well as to identify supporting factors and factors that affecting students difficulties in learning English. The findings revealed that the learning motivation of eleventh grade students at SMAN 1 Ngadiluwih in learning English was moderate. The major sort of motivation in students is extrinsic motivation in the form of authority roles from parents and lecturers. The supporting factor for student learning motivation in learning English is adequate infrastructure. While the factor that affects students difficulties in learning, especially English, is low motivation or interest in learning English. This is shown by their nonchalant attitude or unwillingness to learn English.
