Correlation among reading interest, vocabulary mastery, and reading comprehension of EFL students

Abstrak

Keyword: Reading Interest, Vocabulary Mastery, Reading Comprehension Reading is an important skill that is necessary in understanding a subject. It is more than just a learning activity; it also improves language proficiency and encourages students to pay focus on others. Reading provides a person with a range of information, a message, and makes it simpler to comprehend the texts’ meaning. In this study, the researcher aims to find out a significant correlation among reading interest, vocabulary mastery, and reading comprehension in EFL students, especially in MAN 2 Kediri. This research is quantitative research by using correlational research method. The sample were second-grade students at MAN 2 Kediri. There were 108 students who became the sample in this study. The researcher collected data by using three instruments; a questionnaire and two tests. Questionnaire was used to find out how much students interest in reading at MAN 2 Kediri. Vocabulary mastery test was used to find out how proficient in mastering vocabulary and reading comprehension test was used to find out how well students understand in English reading passages. The researcher conducted validity and reliability test before giving the instrument to the students. The researcher processed all the data that have been obtained from the sample using SPSS 25.0 by the multiple correlation test formula. After analyzing the data, the results obtained in this study that there was a positive significant correlation between reading interest, vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension. The significant value result is 0.000 < 0.05. After calculated there was a correlation coefficient of 0.497 which stated that the three variables were correlated with a medium value. In addition, the R Square on the coefficient of determination stated 0.247 meaning that there was 24.7% related each other of the three variables; reading interest, vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of EFL students.
