An Analysis of Figurative Language on Michael Jackson’s Songs Based on “Perrine’s Theory”
Abstrak
Figurative language is figure of speech a way of adding extra dimensions to language. It is used by the poets because figurative language can say the words what they want to say with interesting expressions meaning by implicit and attractive rather than say it directly and flat. One of the sources of figurative languages which we can get by listening music. One of the popular music is Michael Jackson’s songs. This song, the lyric can express judgments about lifestyles, values, and appearances. Than, song can express attitudes and values. Every song’s lyric has messages and suggestion for the listeners, whether good or bad. The aim of this study is to describe what the figurative language that appears in Michael Jackson’s songs. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative research. The theory that used in this study is Perrine’s theory about figurative languages. According to Perrine there are eleven figure of speech which are included in figurative language. The object from this research is Michael Jackson’s songs. To collect the data, the researcher needs some procedures. These steps are: finding the data, getting references, identifying and listening the data, classifying the data and analyzing the data. The result of the data analysis shows that there are some figurative languages appear in Michael Jackson’s songs, they are simile, personification, hyperbole, symbol, apostrophe, and metaphor. The most dominant figurative language that appears in Michael Jackson’s songs is simile which has seven data.
