Understanding news texts in English is an important skill in learning a foreign language. This research aims to analyze the difficulties faced by students in learning to understand news item text, and to analyze the factors that influence students to understand news item text. This research uses a qualitative design in collecting data and the instruments used to collect data are by distributing tests, questionnaires and written interviews. Data was collected from 1 class consisting of a total of 38 students who had studied in class 12 at SMAN 8 Kota Kediri. Based on the findings, the results of this study show that the majority of students experience difficulties in learning to read, especially in news item text material in terms of lack of vocabulary, unable to understand the main idea in the text, grammatical confusion, unable to grasp the topic of the text, lack of text structure, no can answer the question text well and correctly. Then, in terms of students abilities, they are understanding how to play ideas in the text, understanding reading topics, understanding sentence structure, understanding vocabulary, being able to answer text questions well and correctly, reading diligently.
