Analyzing Code-Switching and Code-Mixing to Portray Gender Dominance in the Korean Drama King the Land
Abstrak
Code-switching and code-mixing are part of the sociolinguistic phenomena spoken by people who are bilingual or multilingual. Code-switching and code-mixing are also widely used by male or female when talking to their interlocutors. Code-switching and code-mixing are also often found in movies or dramas. This study aims to analyze the types of code-switching and code-mixing along with the reasons for their use in one of the famous Korean dramas, King the Land. This study also looks for the factors that affect gender dominance when using code-switching and code-mixing in this Korean drama. By using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study uses Hoffmans (1991) theory both to find the types of code-switching and the types of code-mixing. Hoffman divides code-switching into four types and three types for code-mixing. The data in this study are utterances in the form of dialogue spoken by the actors or actresses in the drama, while the data source is the Korean drama King the Land along with several transcripts in Korean, English, Chinese, Arabic, and Japanese. Observation framework and note-taking technique are used to collect the data which contains the types of code-switching and code-mixing, as well as the amount of gender dominance in each episode. The results of this study show that the use of code-mixing in this Korean drama is more than code-switching. The most widely used code-switching in this drama is intra-sentential switching and tag switching with a percentage of 35.29%. Then for the type of code-mixing, the most widely used is intra sentential code-mixing with a percentage of 46%. The most common reason for using code-switching and code-mixing in this drama is talking about particular topics, such as the facility of the hotel, the rules of the hotel, the products that they sell, etc. For gender dominance in this drama, the male actors are more dominant in the use of code-switching and code-mixing. Gender dominance in this drama is affected by some factors like social class, work demands, their surrounding environment, and men who are more open to expressing what they want to say.
