The Correlation between EFL Students’ Language Learning Style and their English Proficiency in IAIN Kediri

Abstrak

The achievement to learn foreign language is determined by many factors. Learning style is the most concern case to discuss because it will influence students in acquiring second language skill progress (English proficiency). A standardized test, TOEFL measured students‟ English proficiency so that both learning styles and English proficiency focus on whether there is correlation or not. Thus, this study is to examine the correlation between students learning styles and their English proficiency in IAIN Kediri. The correlation model is applied in this research and followed by 48 participants coming from students in the eighth semester. The instruments of the research consisted of two. Using Reid Perceptual Learning Style Preference Questionnaire contained of 30 statements in each question and represented learning style type statement. The answer of questionnaire has been filled by 45 students who have joined TOEFL class. The TOEFL score gained from the final exam score in the eight semesters and held in December while correlation analysis has been used to measure gathering data both questionnaire answer and TOEFL score. The finding of this study shows that most of students‟ questionnaire answers tend to use more than one learning style and the learning style majority of students are auditory, tactile, kinesthetic and group while the minority are represented by visual and individual. In addition, students of English language department have low intermediate level of TOEFL score with mean 436.4. The main finding showed that there was no correlation between students‟ learning styles and their English proficiency. It was proved that learning styles are not dominant factor in influencing second language acquisition. There have been other factors from internal and external affecting students learning foreign language.
