The Analysis of Politeness Strategies Used By an English Teacher at MA ARRAHMAH
Abstrak
The strategy for polite conversation is chosen by people now in the purpose of achieving their main goal by maintaining the hearer’s face. Politeness phenomena can also be appeared in form of direct interaction between English teacher and the students in a school. Therefore, the researcher chooses politeness strategies to analyze politeness phenomena which will happen between the English teacher and students at MA Ar-Rahmah. The researcher analyzes into four types of politeness such as Brown and Levinson’s classification. Those are : positive politeness, bald on record, negative politeness and off record. The descriptive qualitative is used to conduct this research. The reason is to describe and to explain the politeness phenomena in the conversation between English teacher and the students at MA Ar-Rahmah. Furthermore, this study presents the data in the forms of word or utterances. The result of the study shows that four strategies are applied by an English teacher at MA ARRAHMAH and the students in their dialogue. First, positive politeness strategy which is used by the speaker to minimize the distance between expressing friendliness and solid interest and this strategy is commonly used in this novel. Second, bald on record strategy which is used by the English teacher when he wants to achieve the maximum efficiency of the utterance. Third, off record strategy that is used by the English teacher to take some pressures of the hearer. And the last is negative politeness strategy which is used by the English teacher in imposing on the hearer’s face. In this recording, off record and negative politeness are rarely used.
