An Analysis on Characters Education in the Curriculum 2013 EnglishTextbook ofthe Eighth Grade of JuniorHigh School Published by Ministry of National Education

Abstrak

The research was intended to describe characters education which presented in English textbook proposed by Curriculum 2013 of education Ministry of Indonesia. The study was chosen by the following considerations. They are to indicate kinds of Character Education has been compiled in English textbook Curriculum 2013 of Junior High School for Eighth grade and to elaborate the Character Education represented in the English textbook Curriculum 2013 of Junior High School on the Eighth grade. The research purpose is to know the character of education that appear in textbook. This study was descriptive qualitative approach using content analysis because, at first, the researcher evaluated textbook and drew the concept in the end. The data used in this study were in the forms of all in the textbook. In this research, the researcher describe the characters in textbooks using the 18 characters theory written by Kemendiknas (Ministry of National Education) and used quantitative data to facilitate descriptions in explaining each character of education. The researcher use triangulation by expert to validate the accuracy of the researcher.The primary instruments of the research were the researcher and the data sheet was also employed as the second instrument. Some steps were undertaken during the data collection: reading the texts carefully, understanding specific parts related to the research focus intensively, marking certain parts related to the research focus, making a description of the data accompany by a coding process and inserting the data into the table. The findings of this research showed that twelve (12) characters were found in the textbook, those are (Honesty,Discipline, Hard Work, Creativity, Independence, Curiosity, Achievement Appreciation, Love of Peace, Social Awareness, Reading Interest, Responsibility,andFriendliness/Communicative).Independence character is the most dominant character in textbook with the amount of nineteen (19) data or percentage of 21,1%. And there are two (2) characters Curiosity and Love of Peace with the same percentage of 1,2% or just one (1) data.While six (6) characters are not in the textbook (Religious, Tolerance, Democracy, Nationalism, Patriotism, and the lastEnvironment Awareness). As a result, the researcher wishes that the characters education will instill the attitudes they have learned from textbook.
