Mastering reading is very important for students to be able to master other English skills. The teacher have to use some strategies to teach reading comprehension. There are some techniques or methods which can be applied in teaching reading comprehension for examples STAD method and Reciprocal technique. This study is aimed to compare the effectiveness between student team achievement division (STAD) and reciprocal technique to enhance students’ reading comprehension in SMPN 1 Bantur. The research design of this study is Quasi-Experimental Research. The sample of this study was 54 students at the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Bantur in the academic year of 2017/2018. The sample of this study is divided into two classes, VIII B class as experimental group and VIII C class as control group. The experimental class VIII B consist of 28 students and the control class VIII C consist of 26 students. The VIII B class is taught by using STAD technique and VIII C class is taught by using reciprocal technique. The researcher used test as instrument of this research. The data was analyzed by using ANCOVA in SPSS21 version for windows. In the result of pre-test, the mean score of experimental class was 72.50 and the control class was 48.62. In the post-test, the mean score of experimental class was 85.93 and the control class was 67.81. The result of statistical ANCOVA shows that the significance is .226 it is higher than .05 (.226 > .05). The result of the analysis indicates that the p-value turns out to be higher than that of the .05 level of significance. It means that, it does not have enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis. As the null hypothesis could not be rejected, it means that statistically there is no significant difference of the effect of STAD method and Reciprocal technique. Based on the result of the test the researcher concludes that both methods are effective because all of the methods focused in group work technique and both methods can increase the student’s score in reading comprehension.
