One of the aims of learning English is to be able to communicate with each other. As we know that people have different characteristics in interaction. Some people want to be understood by others when they are speaking. They use polite utterances in interaction. This phenomenon often happens in the classroom interaction. The lecturer has an important role to minimize the potential threat from the students in the interaction. In other words the lecturer uses politeness. Politeness appears to be prevalent concept and an important factor in human interaction, especially in teaching process. It is important to know the politeness strategies because it will make the students comfortable in teaching process. Both the lecturer and the students will know the appropriate strategies to communicate with each other. This study uses descriptive qualitative research as the method. The focus of this study is to know politeness strategies employed in lecturer-students interaction based on Brown and Levinsons theory and the articulation of the lecturer-students interaction based on sentence types. The subjects of the study are two different classes of English Department of STAIN Kediri. The first class is Morphology and the second is Current Issues on ELT. The researcher just used four strategies based on Brown and Levinsons theory; positive politeness, negative politeness, and bald on-record to analyze the data. The findings revealed that the lecturer-students employed three strategies; positive politeness, negative politeness, and bald on-record. Teacher and students perception on social distance, the age difference, institutional setting, power, and the limitation of the linguistic ability of the students has contributed to the different choices of politeness strategies. Both the lecturer and the students sometimes do code-switching because they are influenced by their language ability. On the other hand, the articulation of lecturer-students interaction shows that they use interrogative sentences, imperative sentence, declarative sentence, and exclamatory sentence.
