The thesis titled an analysis of Illocutionary Acts Used by the Main Character of Thomas Hardy’s the Return of the Native is a linguistic study that discusses the illocutionary act used by the character in the novel and how the character performs illocutionary in this novel. Novel is a literary work. A novel is a literary work that encompasses more than just depicting human existence. The writer chose the novel because a lot of illocution can be discussed. In this study, the writer limits his research to the novel titled the Return of the native. The theory used in this study is the theory of Searle Jhon, R. This theory divided illocutionary act into five kinds they are representative act, directive act, commissive act, expressive act and declrative act. Direct and indirect use as the method to perform illocutionary act. In addition, four functions of illocutionary act including competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive are used by the character in the novel. However, in this study, the researcher only focuses on the illocutionary act found in the novel. This analysis uses a qualitative approach where this study describes all the data. The writer found the character in the novel used four kinds of illocutionary act, there are representative act, directive act, commissive act and declaration act. This research did not find illocutionary acts of expressive act. The most kind that is used in representative acts is asserting. Kind of directive acts that appear frequently are requesting statements. The most kind that is used in commissive acts is promising. And the declarative act that appears in this research is resigning. Apart from that, the ways to perform illocutionary acts in this novel use direct illocutionary acts. In addition four functions of illocutionary act used by the character in the novel such as competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive.
